Recap changes?

So as I said in my other thread, I've been away from STO for a while now - last time I played was when the romulan faction was first added to the game.

I've started a new romulan character and a discovery timeline federation character so far, working on learning the ropes again, but I had a few questions about things that may have changed since I last played.

First up are beams... I've read that beam fire at will was nerfed or changed, and noticed that in the tooltip now it has an accuracy and damage reduction when active. People have been saying to only use beam fire at will III because of that, as it has the least debuffs. Similarly, I was looking through the skills and noticed that beam overload now also increases beam damage and crit severity for 10 seconds after being activated, which I dont think it used to do (used to just be the one big blast); so on a beam heavy build, especially something using dual beam banks, is it worth using beam overload as a primary attack now?

I've been thinking about going with a fed science ship or a science-focused escort and running dual beam banks forward, with either turrets or 360 beams on the back hardpoints, and trying to make use of things like energy siphon, tachyon beam, etc. to maximize the dual beam bank damage. Is that a viable option? Alternatively, might go with a cruiser and broadside using all beam arrays and beam overload for the damage boost.

Both of these new characters are engineer captains, since that's my preferred character archetype for ground missions (drone and turret spam, of course), I'm still not entirely sure what setup I'll be using on the romulan though. Still looking at possibly the dual beam banks and turrets/360 beams for that one on an arkif/arkala escort, but we'll see.

And an on unrelated, food-for-thought sidenote... anyone else recall the time when Earth Spacedock was full of federation ships? Nowdays it looks like an alien zoo...

An Introduction to The House of Kular

NEH DAQ MAY' 'OH TLHINGAN TEH TLHINGAN
ONLY IN BATTLE IS A KLINGON TRULY KLINGON

The House of Kular, or HoK for short, is the United Federation of Planets (UFP) division responsible for the support of STO's Klingon faction, along with all Klingon-aligned Romulans.
HoK supports the Klingon faction through three primary fields: Fleet Management, Event Support, and Forum Support. HoK manages all of this with a great team of staff filling several different roles, including:

Battle Officers: HoKs front-line warriors responsible for the planing and hosting of events for UFP's Klingon population.

Battle Masters: The staff responsible for maintaining HoK's fleet holdings, and making sure there is always projects available for members to earn Fleet Credits.

Orion Syndicate Traders: Members entrusted with looking after HoK's fleet banks, and acquiring rare & expensive items to sell in our Fleet Shop at a discount.

Positions in these job rolls are often available for members who are interested in giving something back to the community.

What The House of Kular offers it members:

  • Fleet Management: In total HoK manages a grand total of eight holdings and two banks spread across two fleets in-game, of which the main fleet has every upgrade complete (until they add the next one). Along with invites, promotions, Roll Call processing and the messages of the day - HoK is, partly, our in-game admin power-horse for the Klingon Defense Force.
  • Event Support: If fleet management is the pint, events are the blood wine. Supported through a dedicated event team, the largest portion of HoK's staff sees to this field with complete focus. Including but not limited to all end-game PvE content runs, themed PvP events, Bat'leth competitions, and massive Fleet Days - there is something for everyone.
  • Forum Support: Finally, HoK support's STO's Klingon faction on the UFP's forums. Under these forums members can discuss, among themselves, builds, upcoming content, make guides, and most importantly request an invite to the fleet.

Just a wee heads up about this - the Jem'Hadar Environment Suit, when equipped on a female 23rd Century captain only shows the helmet part, and leaves the rest of the body showing whatever outfit is currently being worn.

The Tier 6 Vanity Shield projects do not have a 'Cancel' button.
I only went and foolishly started a new project for a vanity shield in a reputation which I already have it.
Please add a cancel button to these Tier 6 projects.

Carrier Commands (Attack / Recall) Are getting worse.

Carrier Commands are not working properly anymore.

Attack Command: They are not going after your target in the 10km-15km range (they will only engage the enemy if that enemy is within 10km of that pet)

Escort: I haven't noticed anything wrong

Intercept: I haven't noticed anything wrong

Recall: It is kind of a TRIBBLE shoot if they follow the order, sometimes they will ignore it all together other times only one hangar will comply with the order.

Injuries not healing

For the past few days I haven't been able to heal my ship from injuries. I have components on-hand and can't heal. I go to DS9, Fleet Starbase and Sol and none of them let me heal. The "X" to heal is greyed out. I simply have to keep playing until the damage eventually takes care of itself. Has anyone seen this before? Any help would be appreciated.

New Winter Event contest idea.

Thinking of all the contests we have for the summer and inter event. While I'd keep this one for the winter event, one could also use it for the summer event. It would just have to be made in to a holodeck simulation for the Summer event.

But we have the races in both events. Board racing for Summer event, and the two foot races for the winter event. Since we have no use for the Andoria map currently, I though, it would be good to make into a race trek, a ground vehicle race track. I know there would be arguments that there aren't any ground vehicles in Star Trek. However, we can go ahead and end those right now.

There would have to be a flag grab or something at the end for it. I mean this would make a great addition to both events. Any thoughts on how this could come about?

A grav skid skimmed above the ultrafine red dust of Utopia Planetia's boneyard, following the aisle between hundreds of grounded ships and shuttles, coming to a halt between an ancient freighter's stripped skeleton and a row of four nearly identical small ships plus the unfinished skeleton of a fifth. Dust covered them all, but from beneath, on the saucer section of the first four, could be seen their consecutive registry numbers, NX 9847521, NCC 9847522, 3, and 4, and their names, USS Falcon, USS Merlin, USS Kestrel, and USS Hobby. The saucer section of the fifth lacked hull plates where the registry should have been, and its drive section, somewhat more completed than its saucer section, was detached and set behind its saucer.

A tall and a short figure stepped from the truck, both wearing pressure suits in the thin air of Mars. The taller figure walked beneath USS Merlin's hull, patting one of the landing struts as he passed it. The second went to the starboard airlock of the USS Kestrel and accessed the control panel.

The saucer section of these ships merged with the engineering section, the total unit being 33 meters long, 21 meters wide, and a mere 8 meters high. It was only two decks high, though a third deck occupied the forward 240 degree arc around the drive section, the forward end of which was a 6 meter wide by 2 meter high subspace deflector dish below the saucer's nose. The warp nacelles were 3 meter diameter cylinders projecting to either side at the centerline of the saucer on winglets, just outside the curve of the hull. They were almost as long as the saucer section, extending the overall length of the ship to 50 meters and its width to 29 meters.

The tall figure joined the short one when the outer hull plate of the engineering hull beneath the saucer slid open and began to extend its entry ramp.

The helmet communicators crackled in the ever-present ionized dust. "You know the way?" a gravelly bass voice asked.

"I lived on Merlin for two years," came the reply as the pair ascended the ramp to the airlock hatch which had been concealed by the hull plating.

Darkness inside greeted them. Turning on their headlamps illuminated the ultra-fine dust their movements had disturbed. The airlock cycled and the inner hatch opened into a secondary airlock with a pressure door on each wall.

"I'll check Engineering," the gravelly voice said. The shorter figure opened the manual hatch control on the bulkhead opposite the airlock while the tall figure turned to do the same on the hatch beside the primary airlock hatch.

It opened to a ramp which inclined up into darkness. Three meters in and a meter and a half up was a cross passageway that curved forward and aft, with regular pairs of hatches along the outer curve. The tall figure turned forward to a second ramp that rose another meter and a half to an open space. Unfurnished and unfinished, the space was supposed to be a Ship's Logroom and Emergency Battle Dressing Station.

The figure ignored the space, turning to another pressure hatch on the forward bulkhead. It slid open when he pulled the manual lever. The space inside was a finished space, the tiny ship's bridge. The communications console and the navigations console on the starboard side were mirrored by the engineering and helm consoles on the port side. The command console was centered between these four points, with an open space between it and the main view screens.

Behind the captain's chair were the tactical and science stations, and on the aft bulkhead behind them was the Damage Control and Security Display. The tall figure wiped a gloved hand across the tactical panel, disturbing a layer of Mars' red dust. The figure reached beneath the panel and found the catch, then lifted the panel.

Inside the console was somewhat cleaner. The figure tugged at a panel on his suit's breastplate and drew out its com-link cable, which he plugged in to a socket inside the console.

"Computer, activation code Kestrel 1, A, 1, initialize."

A light blinked on inside the console. The computer's voice answered after a short hum.

"1, A, 1, initiation in progress. Verification of user requested."

"Lee, Huang Kai, Lieutenant, USS Merlin."

"Voice authentification confirmed," the computer replied. "Unable to access communication arrays, unable to access navigational arrays, unable to access engineering computer, unable to access internal communications network...."

"Halt," Lieutenant Lee said. "Computer, access last memory file and corroborate: USS Kestrel has been decommissioned for twelve years."

"Unable to confirm current stardate," the computer insisted. "Unable to access Starfleet Data Network."

"Current power reserves are insufficient to power up ship's systems at this time," Lieutenant Lee said. "We will be working on that. Meanwhile, set computer power regulation to extreme power conservation mode and begin a level one diagnostic of the mainframe and data archives."

"That procedure will require 61 hours, 23 minutes, seventeen seconds to complete," the computer said.

"Begin procedure," Lieutenant Lee ordered.

He unplugged the com-link and put it back in its compartment on his suit, then pressed down and latched the panel

He tapped a button on his helmet. "Lee to Sparky, how is it looking down there?"

"You'll be forever getting the dust out, but it looks like everything is here. Give me some dilithium and some antimatter and she'll fly."

"Good enough. Thanks, Chief. Meet you by the airlock."

"Aye," the gravelly voice replied.

Lieutenant Lee looked around the bridge a final time, patted the tactical console, and turned to the open hatch.
